Visit from Glasgow Thematic Society

Tonight we had a visit from Visit from Glasgow Thematic Society. Three of their members gave excellent displays covering a number of topics.

Frank Beattie - Post cards of Aberdeen: gave a great insight to the Granite City.
George Henshilwood - A Day in History: displayed material representing various events and also interesting stamps of Canada.
Graeme U'Ren - Birds: A good insight into the Capercaillie and the Bird of Paradise.

Andy Napier (Lanarkshire) - 'Fiji - A Miscellany'

13th March 2025

Tonight Andy Napier (Lanarkshire) treated us to a very entertainting and informative display entitled "Fiji - A Miscellany".

Resplendent in his Bula Shirt Andy explained that his display was a synopsis of over 60 years of collecting.
The first part of his display consisted of an impressive collection of first issues and early 1870's Stamps. This was followed by a selection of "War Stamps" which are Stamps that contain a levy to help fund the 1st World War. There were also sections on the Fiji "Bomber Fund" which was a specific initiative where Fijians raised money to purchase a bomber aircraft for the British war effort, Fiji's railway's and trains which are owned by the Fiji Sugar Corporation, World War 2 Civil Censorship and a selection of Military Covers.

Chris Harman RDP Hon FRPSL - 'Caveat Emptor: Philatelic Forgers & their Works'

27th February 2025

Tonight we had a zoom meeting and Chris Harman RDP Hon FRPSL entertained us with an outstanding display entitled "Caveat Emptor: Philatelic Forgers & their Works".

Chris gave us a facinating insight into forgers and their work, displaying a comprehensive range of forgeries from their origins up to present day bar coded machins. We were shown in great detail the differences between the genuine items and the forgeries with the differences at times being minuscule.

Tonight we had our annual Competition Night. Competitons between members were held in 4 categories and there were a wide range of topics on show in each category.

Jon Higgins (Kings Lynn PS) - '1894 North Borneo & Labuan; the first two colour pictorials of the Empire'

Tonight we had a zoom meeting and Jon Higgins (Kings Lynn PS) entertained us with an excellent display entitled "1894 North Borneo & Labuan; the first two colour pictorials of the Empire".

Jon began his presentation with a history lesson about Labuan from when it became a Crown Colony in 1848. This was followed with details of the first Labuan stamps which were issued in 1879. He then moved on to British North Borneo and the first stamps issued in 1883. Jon displayed a selection of material including: - Die Proofs, Early Covers, Sample Stamps and Forgeries. The next section covered the 1894 North Borneo & Labuan first colour pictorials of the Empire and sets of stamps celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Colony.

Members' participation night "The 1930s"

9th January 2025

Tonight we had a Members Night and the Topic was "The 1930's". 8 members took part displaying a wide range of material relating to the 1930's.

Some of the topics featured were: - East African Stamps, covers, postcards and revenue stamps: Spanish Stamps & Christopher Columbus: Airmail Covers and Italian East Africa: 1939 World's Fair, New York: Stamps of South West Africa: USA 1930's Commemorative & Definitive Stamp Issues: German Stamps, Postcards, Mini Sheets and the 1936 Olympics: Stamps & covers from the Indian States and a selection of impressive revenue documents.

DDPS Night: "1 Sheet Competition / Recent Acquisitions"

12th December 2024

Tonight we had a Members Night which included the One-Sheet Competition and members displayed some of their recent acquisitions

11 Members paticipated and entries included: - Centenary of Australian Antarctic Exploration, The tallest tropical tree - The Menara, Sun Yat-Sen Commemoration Cover, Victorian Stamps - Some with Dundee Postmarks, British South Africa Company Quitrent Receipt, Islensk Frimerki icelandic stamps of 1994, a Postcard from Vichy France, Printing error on Hungarian Stamp, Singapore 1937 Airmail Rates to Europe & a Japanese Postcard with a Personal Connection. The Winner was Stephen Kennedy with a 1859 Cover Addressed to lady Harriet Forbes Fettercairn that has a Personal Connection.

Various Members displayed some of their Recent Acquisitions. These included a colourful display of African Wildlife Stamps: a Selection of Falkland Islands Stamps: The Great Basin Bristlecone Pine - The World's Oldest Tree: Uganda Stamps, Covers & Postmarks: Air Rhodesia Covers, Rhodesia Stamps & Bush War forces Mail and a Selection of Air Mail Covers.

Richard Hindle (Sheffield PS) - 'The Race to the South Pole'

28th November 2024

Tonight Richard Hindle (Sheffield PS) treated us to an outstanding and informative Zoom display entitled "The Race to the South Pole".

With the use of Stamps, Covers, Postcards and a selection of images Richard took us on a journey to the South Pole. The first part concentrated mostly on the early expeditions of Shackleton and Scott covering their journeys with detailed information on the outward journey's, transport methods, scientific aims, and their attempts to reach the South Pole.
In part 2 Richard covered Roald Amundsen and his successful attempt to reach the pole on 14th December 1911.
Following this was a section dedicated to "The British Antarctic Expedition 1910 to 1913". This was Scott's fateful expedition in which he reached the pole only to discover Amundsen had arrived there first.
This was an outstanding and very detailed presentation with some excellent Philatelic material on display.

DDPS Night: "Officers Entertain"

14th November 2024

Tonights meeting was entitled "Officers Entertain". Four Office Bearers provided a display of approximately Forty sheets each covering a wide range of topics.

David Easson displayed a selection of East African Postal Slogans. These included items relevant to Kenya, Tanganyika, Uganda and also some examples of Slogans in Swahili.

Brian McQueen displayed items from four different topics. These were: - Military Post in Italian East Africa, First Day Flight Covers of the North West Territories, Canadian National Exhibition 1928 Golden Jubilee Flights and a selection of African Revenue Documents.

Stephen Kennedy produced a display of United States Military Mail. This included a brief history, a collection of material from the Civil War through to the present day, which included a section on WWII V-Mail.

Francis Podger displayed Straits Settlements Postal Stationary cosisting of KGV Registered Envelopes. There was a wide range displayed with various envelope sizes, an array of postmarks and various uprated items.

David Millar (DDPS): "Queen Victoria to and from Dundee"

24th October 2024

David Millar (DDPS) entertained us with a display entitled "Queen Victoria to and from Dundee"

David displayed material relating to mail sent to and from Dundee between 1840 and 1961. He fully explained the changes in cancellation methods starting with the Maltese Cross to the more modern ones. His knowledge of this era gave members a fascinating insight to the mail of the time.

Visit from Perth Philatelic Society

10th October 2024

Tonight we had a visit from Michael Brackett and Alistair Ferguson of Perth Philatelic Society.

Alistair Ferguson gave a display on Imperial Airways 1931 that included covers going North to South and reverse and East to West and in reverse. He described the history of Imperial Airways - Britain's first international airline and it numerous routes. Early flights had numerous stops to refuel and there were a number of crashes. The pilots were mainly pilots from the First World War.

Michael Brackett displayed stamps and covers of women's fashions from 1950 to the present day. He started with the earliest fashion with stamps of Adam and Eve and progressed through to super models, Bridget Bardot and Princess Diana. His display included stamps, miniature sheets, booklets and covers.

President's Night: "Covers? - What Kinds of Covers?"

26th September 2024

As is customary the President began the new session with a display, and this year's President Norrie Kelso displayed an excellent collection of material entitled "Covers? - What Kinds of Covers?".

In the first half of his display Norrie showed a selection of covers from 80 different Post Offices in Saskatchewan. The Covers were varied and included a selection of Advertising and First Flight Covers with many different stamps and cachets.

In part two Norrie presented a selection of covers from his collection of "Tuppeny Blues". His display included stamps from all of the 13 plates that were issued.
